MEMORIAL GROVES UPDATE AS OF JAN. 2025:

Memorial Groves is currently in the schematic design phase. This means the design team, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects and other consultants, have analyzed the extensive information and data gathered in the planning phase and are further developing the master plan concept into a thoughtful and site-specific design.

  • As part of the planning process, MPC has invested considerable resources to understand the ecological and cultural components of this project. Our comprehensive approach includes:
                   – Expert ecological and arboricultural assessments,
                   – Complete survey of trees greater than 6 inches in diameter
                   – Detailed soil analysis of different zones
                   – Extensive consultation with historians and cultural experts
  • In designing Memorial Groves, Nelson Byrd Woltz and the project consultants seek to strike a balance between ecological priorities and cultural history. Upon completion, it will:
    • Create a living memorial, offering Houstonians a beautiful new landscape for education, recreation and reflection
    • Honor those who trained at and supported Camp Logan during WWI-era Houston and showcase the rich history of Houston, Camp Logan and the 24th Infantry Regiment
    • Improve the health and resiliency of much of the existing landscape, while protecting and revitalizing the existing Gulf Coast prairie along the railroad track
    • Add family-friendly amenities including restrooms, picnic spots, and play areas
    • Provide additional free parking inside Memorial Park

About the Master Plan and Memorial Park Conservancy

Memorial Park Conservancy (MPC) takes great pride in managing and stewarding Memorial Park, one of Houston’s greatest assets.

Memorial Groves, approved in the 2015 Memorial Park Master Plan, is our next scheduled project.  It is a project undertaken within the Ten-Year Plan, which is an accelerated suite of projects in the Master Plan that has been made possible by a catalyst gift from Kinder Foundation and the generosity of many other donors. We (MPC) execute these projects in partnership with Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Uptown Development Authority, and Kinder Foundation.

As with all other Master Plan projects, Memorial Groves demands thoughtful design plus careful and thorough research, study, and consideration. Together with our project partners, we are ensuring the project receives the attention it deserves.
