Movie Screening of “The 24th”: 104th Anniversary of Houston Mutiny & Riots

Memorial Park Conservancy, along with presenting sponsors, Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, invite you to the screening of the movie The 24th. This special evening, which is designed to mark the 104th anniversary of the Houston Mutiny & Riots, is also made possible with support from these partners – Harris County Precinct Four Commissioner R. Jack Cagle, Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin (District C) and Uptown Houston. As the steward of the historic site of Camp Logan, a WWI training camp which is today’s Memorial Park, Memorial Park Conservancy seeks to commemorate this tragic day in Houston’s and the nation’s history to help us learn from history and reflect upon the past.

This screening, along with a weekend of educational and engagement events, memorializes the legacy of the 24th Infantry Regiment, recognizes the discrimination and violence they endured, and tells the story of the resulting tragedy of August 23, 1917. All members of the 24th were tried in military court without adequate representation or allowed due process to appeal their conviction. This second tragedy, an unfair trial, resulted in hangings and life sentences for many of these soldiers, which ultimately led the U.S. military to change how it administers capital punishment.

Thank you to our presenting sponsors and partners for your leadership in sharing this important story of Houston and the nation’s history.
