Originally built in 1964, Bayou Bend Bridge provides a scenic entry from Memorial Park to the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens. The unusual wooden suspension bridge, designed by engineer Walter P. Moore, is owned and maintained by The City of Houston. In the fall of 2014, the historic bridge required emergency repairs due to deterioration. Since, The City of Houston has commissioned plans to secure the existing structure through foundation repairs and steel reinforcements.
The bridge repairs will be undertaken in three phases funded by the Uptown TIRZ and managed in partnership with the City of Houston:
- Phase I: Cable Supports Emergency Repairs – September to December 2014
- Phase II: Tower Columns and Foundation Repairs -- August to mid-October 2015
- Phase III: Wood Railing and Decking Replacement – Summer to September 2016
All construction work is being closely coordinated with MFAH to minimize disruption to regularly scheduled public access to the Bayou Bend Collections and Gardens.
