The Cullen family and friends gather in front of the renamed Roy H. Cullen Running Trails Center at Memorial Park Conservancy.
MARCH 15, 2017 - Supporters of Memorial Park Conservancy and The Cullen Foundation gathered for the official naming dedication of the Roy H. Cullen Memorial Park Running Trails Center.
Joe Turner, Director of Houston Parks and Recreation Department, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Brief remarks honored the generous contribution of The Cullen Foundation to Memorial Park. Roy’s wife Mary and members of the Cullen family unveiled a new sign recognizing the facility as the Roy H. Cullen Running Trails Center. A reception followed.
The Cullen Foundation pledged a lead gift of $2 million for the Memorial Park Master Plan. As part of this gift, the Running Trails Center which opened in October 2014 was renamed in Roy’s honor. The Running Trails Center is located on the south side of Memorial Drive at the foot of the Memorial Park Living Bridge, near the Seymour Lieberman Exer-Trail. The 4,400 square-foot stucco building provides amenities such as lockers and showers for runners, bicyclists and other park visitors; restrooms; towel rentals; vending machines and a multi-purpose room; and additional parking and office space for the Memorial Park Conservancy and the Houston Police Department.
The Roy H. Cullen Running Trails Center will anchor a running complex planned on Memorial Park’s south side as outlined in the Park’s Master Plan. The completed complex will recognize Memorial Park as the home of running in Houston.
Some 10,000 visitors use Memorial Park’s Seymour Lieberman Exer-Trail daily. As part of the 2015 Memorial Park Master Plan, the trail is currently being extended to a full 3 miles and will be completed by 2018.
